Fresh greens in January

A few years ago, I did not know it was possible to harvest greens in January in upstate NY, but this picture shows a lush harvest of multiple types of greens from a past January. Extending harvest to be a year round event is a reality. Eliot Coleman, master gardener from Maine, has laid an solid foundation for the four season harvest. Inspired by his knowledge and experience, we have been using an unheated greenhouse to extend our harvest and after having had one, I do not want to be without it.

Hoop Houses (unheated greenhouses for year round harvesting)
The greenhouse below belongs to our neighbors who we have done "farmy" stuff with in the past. They built a few of these fabulous hoop houses and use them year round to grow a variety of crops, including sweet potatoes, which are not shown here. Pretty cool stuff!
