Our Story
I'm Elizabeth Walters, flower farmer/artisan at Overflow Farm. I started growing flowers for market when we moved to Dillon, Montana in the fall of 2020, and currently grow on approx 1/4 acre including the area in the 30 X 72 hoop house.
Before growing flowers for market, I worked 10+ years as a glassblower after earning my BFA in Glass at the Rhode Island School of Design. Our handblown glass that was sold throughout the country and at one point we had a design contract with Dansk/Lenox.
From 2000-2020, I sold antique millinery trims (www.vintagefeathers.com) while homeschooling our 4 kids, growing food crops for our family, keeping chickens, and a family cow.
In 2019, I accepted a position as an acetate negative conservationist for a digital archiving company in the Berkshires, working there until the COVID lockdowns of 2020.
When I need something built or someone to bounce ideas off of, Michael is the one I turn to. He is the one who built our hoophouse (with some help from our son Martin), and he helps with our sales events.
After Michael worked with me in the glass blowing business, he worked as a builder and fine woodworker. He eventually went full time gig with the USPS, retiring April 2025.
2026 is new season for us. Michael and I are in the process of designing/building a workplace that will house a fine woodworking shop, a glassblowing studio, and a propagation greenhouse/design studio. We will post updates on our progress throughout the year.
Custom Farming.
Picked with care.
From deciding on a field plan to choosing which crops to grow, from selecting seeds, plants, and tubers and propagating them to harvesting the flowers, everything we do is ‘picked with care’. Dillon is not a easy place to grow flowers. Extreme temperature changes, high winds, desert level precipitation, and soil that is primarily clay with a high pH all contribute to making it quite challenging. At least it’s challenging for me. Each year, I review what I did the previous season. What crops were successful? What crops were a disappointment? And if I want to try growing the disappointments again, what do I adjust to increase my chances for success next time? And then there is the marketing aspect of each crop…did customers buy it? Or was it a marketplace flop? Do I have certain crops or colors I will need for a wedding palette? All these factors weigh in to how my choices are ‘picked with care’.
